A special weather statement from the National Weather Service in Bismarck this morning warns of a potential heavy snow system expected to impact your Christmas morning travel.  This accumulating snow event is expected to begin in southwest North Dakota on the overnight and move into southcentral North Dakota by morning.  one to three inches of snow is expected but confidence is growing for the potential of a heavier snow band that could bring upwards of six inches or more of snow.  The heaviest accumulation of snow is expected south of Highway 200.  The wind is not expected to be a factor with this first system.

The system is expected to move into eastern North Dakota by afternoon.  Northcentral and northwest North Dakota are only expecting very light snow with little or no accumulations expected.

This Christmas Day snowstorm will impact your holiday travel.  Especially areas that receive the heavier snow.

Another round of snow is expected later Sunday into Monday, and again on Tuesday.  In addition, dangerous wind chills are possible late this weekend and through next week.  Temperatures are expected to dip into the teens below zero for overnight lows by mid-week with highs around zero or slightly below zero with very cold windchills.  This will be the coldest air so far in the season.

Weather officials warn holiday travelers to pay attention to forecasts, road conditions, and to pack a winter survival kit in your vehicle before you leave.
