Folk legend Joan Baez released her first album in over a decade, Whistle Down the Wind, and it earned the icon a Grammys nomination in 2019. It's in the running against Black Cowboys, a solo album released by Carolina Chocolate Drops founding member Dom Flemons.

Rifles & Rosary Beads is Mary Gauthier's ninth studio album, a project she co-wrote with Beth Nielsen Chapman and veterans of the U.S. armed forces. Iron & Wine, meanwhile, are nominated for Weed Garden, the follow-up to their 2018 Grammy Awards Best Americana Album-nominated record Beast Epic.

Rounding out the list are folk / bluegrass / Americana collective the Punch Brothers. They're in the running with their most recent album, All Ashore.
