Eric Paslay is pivoting to more serious themes for his new single, "Angels in This Town."

The rising country star scored a swing and a miss at country radio with "High Class," which was a fun departure from his heavier fare. The first single from his upcoming Dressed in Black album stalled at country radio despite Paslay breaking out surprise dance moves when he debuted the song at the Country Radio Seminar this year, as well as an entertaining video for the song.

He's back in his wheelhouse with "Angels in This Town," which he co-wrote with Corey Crowder and Erik Dylan. The lyrics of "Angels in This Town" speak to his Christian faith, but not in a beating-you-over-the-head-with-the-Bible kind of a way.

"Call it what you want / But I know the truth / Angels in this town / Looking out for me and you / All I know is I / Wouldn't be here now / Call it what you want / I swear there's angels in this town," Paslay sings in the chorus.

The genius of the lyrics is that they speak to people of different beliefs on different levels; those who believe in religion can read that into the text, while those who don't can still appreciate the notion of things working out for the best in a way that seems impossible to explain. Musically the song is an up-tempo, commercial country track that fits in perfectly with contemporary commercial country radio, and could very well serve as Paslay's next breakthrough track. An unexpected string section fill colors the bridge for a sonic diversion that really makes the track stand out.

Did You Know? Paslay co-wrote his hit single, "She Don't Love You", with John Wayne's granddaughter, Jennifer Wayne.

Eric Paslay, "Angels in This Town" Lyrics:

"Hail Mary touchdown, caught it, don't know how / Felt something lift you up a little bit higher / Six for the win and the crowd goes wild / Ain't nothin' better than a hometown crowd / Between the dirt and sky / Don't know where or why / Miracles arrive."

Chorus:

"Call it what you want / But I know the truth / Angels in this town / Looking out for me and you / All I know is I / Wouldn't be here now / Call it what you want / I swear there's angels in this town."

"No stop hard and night shift tired / Should have been a funeral, should have been a fire / Woke up head-on, 90 miles an hour / Missed that truck by the skin of your tire."

Repeat Chorus

"Between the dirt and sky / Don't know when or why."

Repeat Chorus
