MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A law officer from Florida with ties to the Dakotas is Mandan's new police chief.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the Mandan City Commission on Monday voted 4-1 to hire Osceola County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Ziegler to lead the city force.

The 46-year-old Ziegler has served in law enforcement for 25 years, 14 of them in supervisory roles. He beat out 16 other applicants for the position, including Mandan Deputy Police Chief Paul Leingang.

Ziegler says he and his wife have family in North Dakota and South Dakota, and want to live closer to them.

He expects to start his new duties after the holidays. He'll succeed Dennis Bullinger, who's retiring after 42 years on the city force, the last eight as chief.
