BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Game and Fish Department is making 49,000 deer licenses available for the fall hunting season, 13 percent more than last year.

The deer population in the state has been hurt by a decline in grassland habitat, the booming oil industry in the west and several harsh winters. The number of licenses issued last year was the lowest in 40 years.

However, state Wildlife Chief Jeb Williams says the deer population is "stable to increasing" after several years of reduced licenses and mild winters.

He says a small rise in deer licenses will provide increased hunting opportunities while continuing to encourage growth in the deer population.

The deer gun season opens at noon Nov. 4 and continues through Nov. 20. The license application deadline is June 1.
