BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is reminding farmers about anhydrous ammonia rules as spring planting nears.

People who use the fertilizer must file proper documentation before transferring anhydrous from a tanker to a nurse tank in the field. Goehring says written notification needs to go the state Agriculture Department, the county commission and the county emergency manager.

The notification needs to include a legal description of where the planned transfer will take place and personal contact information. It should be done 30 days before a transfer. There's no fee involved, and the form can be found on the Agriculture Department's website.

Goehring says the rule is in place to ensure that people handling anhydrous have proper training, and to make information readily available to emergency responders in case of an accident.
