FARGO, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp says she will announce plans for her political future in the next "five (to) seven" days.

Rumors of a Heitkamp bid for governor were swirling months before North Dakota Gov. Jack Darlymple announced last week that he will not seek re-election.

KFGO-AM reports Heitkamp says she is "working through" some details and understands that it's important to reveal her plans as soon as possible. She adds that it's unfair to North Dakota residents, the Democratic Party and her staff to "drag out" the issue.

The Democrat from North Dakota made an unsuccessful bid for the governor's mansion in 2000. She is a former state tax commissioner and attorney general.
