As we approach the end of this year, we look forward to a new beginning. But as usual, it's always good to ring in the New Year with a BANG!

We all know about the huge celebrations in New York's Times Square and other cities in the US have huge parties such as New Orleans. Some unique and rather different celebrations that I am familiar are the dropping of the Pine Cone in Flagstaff, AZ on Main Street. The same fun and festivities apply in Flagstaff, the difference is the dropping of a huge lighted pine cone due to the close proximity of the Coconino National Forrest.

I found some other unique celebrations such as Atlanta's Annual Peach Drop, which measures 8-feet tall and 8-feet wide and weights more than 800 pounds.

Miami's signature New Year's Eve Icon is the dropping of The Big Orange is a 35-foot neon that ascends about 400 feet to its home on top of a local hotel.

In Mt. Olive, North Carolina welcomes in the new year with the drop of pickle! This is a lighted pickle and the drop takes place at the corner of Cucumber and Vine Streets.

What kind of uniqueness do we have in the Bismarck-Mandan Area? We should think of some kind of "thing" or "item" we can drop to draw attention to possibly the Downtown area? How about a huge lit icicle? Or maybe a huge snowball?  We are a hardy bunch of people that embrace the cold weather, I'm sure we can come up with some ideas!
