She may be the original American Idol, but come 2018, Kelly Clarkson will be a judge on The Voice. The singer announced the big news -- with a little help from The Voice coach Blake Shelton -- on Thursday (May 11) afternoon.

Shelton and Clarkson held a Facebook Live event on Shelton's Facebook page to reveal Clarkson's upcoming new role on The Voice. Season 14 of The Voice won't air until 2018; the show is currently wrapping up Season 12, with Season 13 scheduled for later this year.

“I’m so excited to join The Voice at NBC. We’ve gone back and forth about a role as a coach for years, but the timing hasn’t been right until now," Clarkson says (quote via Billboard). "I have always loved appearing on the show as an adviser or performer and established an amazing relationship with the network during my Christmas special. I can’t wait to turn my chair and see the faces of up-and-coming artists and provide them with the help and support they’ve needed to break into the industry."

The news of Clarkson's role on The Voice puts to rest the rumors that she would be joining the recently announced American Idol reboot. ABC executives officially announced on Tuesday (May 9) that the network will be reviving the popular TV singing competition in 2018.

“Kelly has been a part of The Voice family for many years as an adviser and performer. We are thrilled she has chosen to join us as a coach to mentor the next generation through our unique vocal boot camp," says Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and reality group for NBC Entertainment. "Every time Kelly Clarkson sings, you are reminded what an incredible voice really is. We are looking forward to the sound of Kelly Clarkson on The Voice.”

In June of 2016 Clarkson announced a new record, to be released in 2017, on her new label home, Atlantic Records. The disc will be a soul- and R&B-influenced album, but in early 2015, Clarkson told Time magazine that while she was working on her latest project, Piece By Piece, she was also working on a country record.
