I've been around a bit in this broadcasting career, and along the way, I've seen and heard of different traditions for the New Year.

Let’s start with food. There are certain foods people eat on New Year's Day to bring good luck for the New Year. Some are common, such as black eye beans. They are supposed to bring good luck.

Greens, like spinach, because the green resembles money. Fish, the scales resemble coins.

Having a Bundt or circular cake, resembles the circle of life. When I lived in Arizona, they ate pork on New Year's Day, apparently the pig is good luck! While in Arizona another tradition was eating grapes at the stroke of midnight. Eating 12 grapes, one for each of the coming months in the New Year. If one turns up sour, that is the month that you could have bad luck in.

What are your traditions for your family in Bismarck-Mandan? Whatever they are, be sure to stay safe and warm!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
