North Dakota has snagged the number seven spot on a list of states that make it easiest to eat local.

Eating local is something all communities strive for but not all states have the same resources available to their citizens. A Vermont-based organization known as Strolling of the Heifers put together a Locavore Index which indicates how each state ranks based on the availability of local food.

A number of statistics are looked at to determine where each state stands. These statistics include number of farmers markets, community supported agriculture (CSAs), food hubs and percentage of school districts with farm-to-school programs.

The list of ten states that have the easiest access to locally grown foods are as follows:

  1. Vermont
  2. Maine
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Oregon
  5. Hawaii
  6. Rhode Island
  7. North Dakota
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Montana
  10. Iowa

States that were placed among the 10 worst for available locally grown food include Texas, Nevada and Arizona.
