After reading this, you may think twice before pouring a glass of water to drink from your faucet.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) released a report on Wednesday showing that hundreds of contaminants were found in the American water supply. Such harmful contaminants can cause cancer, problems in pregnancies, developmental problems in children, and other serious medical conditions.

The report on North Dakota from EWG is based on test results conducted by water utilities in North Dakota and provided by North Dakota Department of Health. Throughout our state, there were 45 contaminants detected in the water supply. Of those 45 contaminants, 13 were found to be above either health or legal limits.

EWG's tap water database provides a list of large utilities in the state, contaminants found in North Dakota above health guidelines, and contaminants found in North Dakota above legal limits. The database also shows a list of all utilities in North Dakota that have accrued the most violations through March 2017.

If you clicked either of the links in the previous paragraph, you can see that the data collected is pretty alarming. The best way to counter this problem is to purchase a water filter. EWG provides a guide to buying a water filter.

Now that you're aware of what's in your water, keep calm and filter your tap water.
