BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota motorists in dedicated left turn lanes will soon be seeing yellow instead of green.

The state Department of Transportation is replacing the current green ball traffic signal in left turn lanes with a flashing yellow arrow. The new signal means that left turns are permitted, but motorists must use caution and yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic.

Transportation officials say the flashing yellow arrow turn signals have shown to be safer, more efficient and more flexible than traditional signals.

In addition, federal rules no longer allow for a green ball in left turn lanes.
