A salmonella outbreak has caused Jennie-O to recall 91,000 pounds of raw turkey.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Jennie-O raw turkey products have been linked to 74 cases of salmonella, including one death.

The outbreak of salmonella was announced by the CDC back in July, and the total number of those affected from the outbreak strain of salmonella is up to 164 in 35 states, including North Dakota.

There have also been 63 people hospitalized and one death in California as a result of the outbreak.

The CDC has advised consumers to take steps to prevent salmonella poisoning:

  • Wash your hands after handling raw turkey products since salmonella can spread from one person to another.
  • Cook raw turkey thoroughly to kill harmful germs. The cooking temperature should be at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Be careful to not spread germs from raw turkey around food preparation areas.
  • The CDC does not recommend feeding raw diets to your pets.

Those that become infected with Salmonella food poisoning usually experience the following symptoms within the first 12 to 72 hours: diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
