Severe Weather Recap From Friday Night, July 21 In Bismarck

Severe weather moved through the Bismarck-Mandan area Friday night causing wind damage, flooded street and had drivers seeking over-head cover from hail.

The National Weather Service in Bismarck says wind reports from 50 mph to hurricane force (74 mph) were reported throughout the region. Hail had motorist running for cover in Bismarck. Most ATM banking covers, gas station awnings and car-wash areas were packed with vehicles seeking shelter around 10 to 11 p.m. Friday night. This was the scene at Shell Gas station at S. Washington and Expressway during the hail-storm.


Hail size varied across the region, and according to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, the hail reported in Morton County was between 2.50-2.75 inches in size. Burleigh County had 1.75 inches and McLean County was with most other counties with an inch sized hail.

There was an unconfirmed report of a tornado touching down in Oliver County near Cross Ranch State Park.

There were sightings of funnel clouds around the Bismarck-Mandan area as the storm moved in from various sources. Here is the image of a funnel cloud in North Bismarck from Vonda Walter.

By 11:45 p.m. Friday night, the storm moved East and left Bismarck with flooded streets and some areas had power outages.
