OAK ISLAND, N.C. (AP) — Hunter Treschl and his cousin were goofing off in the waves at a North Carolina beach when he felt something bump into his left calf.

The teen thought it was a big fish of some kind so he moved away.

It was then that the shark bit the 16-year-old's left arm off above the elbow.

In a videotaped interview released Tuesday by the hospital that is treating him, Treschl said his cousin helped him to make it back onto the beach in Oak Island before others came running to his aid.

Despite losing his dominant hand in Sunday's attack, Treschl said he's going to try to fight and live a normal life.
