Recently, I met a young married man who was on a mission to visit every state in the union. Last weekend, (Memorial Day weekend), I started up a conversation with him at a local eatery. North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming completed his visits to the 48 Continental states, with Hawaii and Alaska remaining.

It is no surprise, North Dakota was one of his final states to visit, as we have reported before, North Dakota is one of the least visited states in the country.

This got me thinking about a story I ran across on 24/7 Wall St., the best and worst states to grow old in. This is not a story of the best or worst states to retire. These are the worst states to live out your golden years.

24/7 Wall St. examined several factors in every state in the country including income, health costs, environment and quality of life.

Spoiler alert, a majority of the worst states to grow old in are exclusively in the South, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the others along the Gulf Coast.

The top states to grow old in are-

• New Hampshire
• Minnesota
• Vermont
• Virginia
• Colorado

North Dakota ranked at # 29 with high arks in healthcare and the average life expectancy in the state is better than most at 80 years old compared to 79.1 years on most other of the best states.
