It's a part of gift giving for Christmas, gift returning or exchanging. After all, who wants the Cha-Cha-Cha Chia Pet? I mean Really?

One of the busiest days of the year outside of Black Friday are the few days after Christmas for returns or exchanges. Stores try to accommodate customers with extra help and service counters.

We checked with Market Watch.com and here is the information we found from the major national stores that could come in handy. You should always check with the local retail store before heading out.

Amazon- Jan. 31 for most items shipped 11/01 thru 12/31. Read the fine print, items such as downloads have a no refund policy.

Best Buy- January 15 for most purchases made from Nov. 1 - Dec. 31. BB has an ELITE MEMBERS PROGRAM, members have an extended period to return merchandise.

Kohl's- no deadline, make sure you have receipt.

Sears- has a complicated return policy, check with the local store. Sears has a 90/60/30 day return policy depending on the gift. Even exchange only on some items and a 15% restocking fee on some items.

Target- 90 days on most gifts. On electronics and entertainment items, 30 days apply. Target may deny refund on opened items without receipt. REDcard members have an additional 30 days on returns.

Walmart- 90 days with most items beginning on 12/26. Here too, somewhat complex. For purchases made from 11/1 forward, 15 days on PCs, tablets, cameras and much more. You should check with the local store.

To be safe, if possible, have the receipt and call the store and double check on their return policy, including how long you have to return items and be specific when talking to the store. Let them know if you're returning clothes or electronics. Different return dates could apply for electronics and ask if they charge a restocking fee.

Check with Market Watch.com for additional information from retailors and on line stores.
