UND Nickname Task Force Meets Near Denver

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A task force working on a plan for coming up with a new University of North Dakota nickname is holding a public meeting in the Denver area.

The Thursday night meeting in the suburb of Englewood was being hosted by UND associate vice president Sandra Mitchell and task force member Karl Goehring, who helped lead UND to a national hockey title in 2000.

Sixty-eight percent of North Dakota residents voted in 2012 to drop the Fighting Sioux nickname that was deemed "hostile and abusive" by the NCAA before it was retired. The Legislature enacted a three-year moratorium on a new moniker.

The task force is expected to submit recommendations for a potential nickname selection process to UND President Robert Kelley by the end of the year.
