For the first time in 16 years, the University of North Dakota men's hockey team is bringing a national championship back to Grand Forks, after defeating Quinnipiac 5-1 Saturday night, April 9th, in Tampa.

The Flying Hawks got on the board first, when Shane Gersich found the back of the net at 11:56 of the first period. The goal was assisted by Gage Ausmus and Brock Boeser.

Boeser got in on the goal scoring action just a few minutes later, scoring a short-handed goal at 14:16 to give UND a 2-0 lead. Quinnipiac responded, however, with Tim Clifton finding the back of the net at 18:53 to make the score 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

With no goals in the second period, the score remained 2-1 heading into the third.

UND padded their lead in the third period, after Drake Caggiula buried the puck in the back of the net. Caggiula scored his second goal of the period just moments later and Austin Poganski added a fifth, helping secure the 5-1 win.

This is UND's eight national championship, putting them just one behind the University of Michigan for the most in NCAA Division I Men's Hockey history.
