It is spring and summer and this means more time out in the sun and with more exposure to the sun comes the increase chances of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and skin cancer rates have increased between 1982 and 2011. And it is worth mentioning, melanoma is one of the most common and deadliest forms of skins cancer in the United States.

The National Cancer Institute estimates over 90,000 new cases of skin cancer in 2018 resulting in over 9000 deaths.

And the cost to treat melanoma has more than doubled in the last five years.

The best way to prevent melanoma is to restrict your exposure in suntan beds and limit your exposure to direct sunlight and never exposure in the sun without protection. (sunscreen)

24/7 Wall St. recently published the states with the most skin cancer cases. To determine the states with the most cases of melanoma, 24/7 Wall St. studied the data from the Center for Disease control and prevention.

You would think states like Florida, Louisiana and the coastal states would rank high, and you would be wrong. It could be, these states know to use sunscreen on a daily basis. Here are the top states for skin cancer

  1. Utah
  2. Vermont
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Minnesota
  5. Delaware

The states with the least sun related cancer include Texas, New Mexico, Alaska, Nevada and Mississippi.

North Dakota ranked #30 with 21.3 per 100,00 residents in annual skin cancer diagnoses.
