CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A legislative committee plans to sponsor a bill that could turn a Missile Alert Facility near Cheyenne into a historic site and tourist attraction.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports the Joint Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources interim committee voted on Oct. 21 to sponsor a bill that would allow the Air Force to donate the facility to the state. It would also seek one-time funding of $175,000 for exhibits, landscaping, equipment, parking and other needs. It also would appropriate $51,000 annually for operation, maintenance and salaries.

The facility, which was built in 1962, includes a blast-proof bunker where misileers from F.E. Warren Air Force Base lived and worked during their shifts.

Travis Beckwith, cultural resources manager at the base, says there are Minuteman Missile historic sites in North Dakota and South Dakota, notable the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site in Cooperstown, North Dakota.
