White Minnesota & South Dakota Farmers Involved in Race-Related Lawsuit of Federal Government

In 2021, society's worries mostly revolve around the pandemic or race. Most of the time, we think about People of Color when the subjects of racial inequality and injustice are brought up. But there are times where we are reminded of the struggle of white people. Several state groups of white farmers and ranchers are fighting the federal government for loan forgiveness.

A group of white Midwestern farmers and ranchers is suing the Federal Government over President Joe Biden's American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

According to PBS, a group of Midwestern farmers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Ohio are suing the federal government over a race issue involving the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The group says that they are being discriminated against because, as white people, they will not benefit from $4 billion in relief that is meant to forgive loans for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.

White farmers and ranchers, not considered socially disadvantaged, will not benefit from $4 billion in loan forgiveness.

The PBS report states that socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers are defined as "Black, American Indian, Hispanic, Alaskan Native, Asian American, or Pacific Islander." As white people, the complainants will not benefit from the $4 billion in loan forgiveness. The PBS story states that "The filing seeks a court order prohibiting the USDA from applying racial classifications when determining eligibility for loan modifications and payments under the stimulus plan."
