Best American Roots Song is a Grammy Awrards category that has been won by songs such as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's "If We Were Vampires," 2018's crowned winner. In 2019, country, folk and Americana music icons are in the running with songs that are instant classics, including two from the legendary John Prine. In this category, the award goes to the songwriters.

Leading the pack of nominated songs is "All the Trouble," Lee Ann Womack's blues-driven, soulful ballad written by Womack with Waylon Payne and Adam Wright. It's a powerful contender, event against musical giant Mavis Staples and her song "Build a Bridge," written by Jeff Tweedy.

"The Joke," written by Brandi Carlile, Dave Cobb, Phil Hanseroth and Tim Hanseroth also earned Carlile a nomination for Best American Roots Performance thanks to its poignant lyrics and haunting melodies. And then there's "Knockin' on Your Screen Door" and "Summer's End," both penned by the legendary Prine along with Pat McLaughlin. The songs appear on Prine's Best Americana Album-nominated The Tree of Forgiveness.
