As of Tuesday, May 1st, the North Dakota Department of Transportation is issuing REAL ID complaint credentials. This doesn't mean they've been issuing fake IDs (insert eye roll emoji).

Back in 2005, the REAL ID Act was passed and enacted some recommendations for the 9/11 Commission. The REAL ID requirements are said to meet "federal standards for physical security and verification of identity and legal presence in the United States."

As of October 2020, only federally approved identification such as a REAL ID or passport to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility.

In order to obtain a REAL ID, the process will be the same as applying for a new driver's license. No additional cost will be required for a REAL ID.

The Bismarck drivers license office is currently the only location issuing the REAL IDs. Fargo and Minot locations will begin issuing the credentials on May 21st, Williston and Dickinson on May 22nd, Grand Forks on May 23rd, and Jamestown Devils Lake will issue REAL IDs starting on May 24th.
