BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials are asking residents of Bismarck and Lincoln to refrain from unnecessary outdoor watering amid construction at the water treatment plant.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the plant has a temporarily lower capacity because of work related to a water-softening project. Keith Demke with the city of Bismarck says residents are using 3 million more gallons of water a day than the plant can process.

Water reservoir levels are low, and reserves could be depleted if needed in an emergency.

Demke says the project will increase the plant's treatment capacity. Its completion is expected by June 1.
