BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Hundreds of Bismarck area residents are rallying to save a local pet cemetery slated for closure.

Owner Jarod Obering recently announced Billie's Meadow Pet Cemetery in Bismarck will be closing to the public within the next several months. He tells the Bismarck Tribune the property has changed hands three times within the past year and he no longer has access to equipment needed to maintain the cemetery.

Obering has extended the March 30 closing date to allow pet owners to collect items and relocate animals buried on the land.

Nearly 1,000 people have joined a Facebook group aiming to save the pet cemetery. The woman who started the group says it might launch an effort to raise money to pay for the equipment.
