President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act on Monday, May 9th, making the American Bison the national mammal.

This should make all of North Dakota proud as the state's delegation played a huge role into making this law a reality. Republican Sen. John Hoeven is the original sponsor in the Senate, Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp was a co-sponsor, and Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer was a co-sponsor of the House bill.

The law takes immediate effect and does not hinder any ranching efforts currently used to raise bison across the state.

The bison can run as fast as 40 mph and can weigh as much as one ton making it the heaviest land animal in North America.
