WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A Williams County commissioner is questioning the need to relocate Williston's airport, raising concerns in letters to state and federal lawmakers.

Martin Hanson says he believes the city should keep the airport where it is, and upgrade the facility. He says that would reduce the cost and also preserve farmland.

Officials expect to break ground in the spring on a $254 million airport. The city is looking to acquire 1,540 acres from eight landowners — a majority of which is now farmed.

Hanson says if a new airport is built, it should be in McKenzie County so it could serve Williston, Watford City and Sidney, Montana.

Airport Director Steven Kjergaard tells the Williston Herald that upgrading the existing airport would cost almost as much as building a new one.
