The first thing I saw on my Facebook newsfeed this morning was an image of a Jesus statue with black pain splattered on its face. According to Valley News Live (Fargo), St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo's Jesus statue was tagged by a graffiti artist. The vandalism either happened on April 16 or 17. We do not know much more, other than that there is an investigation underway and that police are not further commenting on the situation. Get the story here.

At this point, we can only speculate as to why the Jesus statue at St. Mary's was hit by vandalism. There could be a number of reasons, ranging from bored kids to someone making a statement about the controversy surrounding the Catholic Diocese. While an incident like this could be described as "shocking," is it really surprising?

There has been some serious controversy surrounding the Catholic Church in North Dakota. Like with many stories of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, investigations into allegations have been conducted, but nothing has really been done. In fact, you may remember that North Dakota's current statute of limitations made it impossible for many victims (dating back to the 1950s) to get justice for their abuses at the hands of clergy members. Why do you think the Jesus statue at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo was vandalized over the weekend?
