Garth Brooks is nominated for Entertainer of the Year, the night's highest honor, at the 2017 CMA Awards. The singer, who holds 12 CMA trophies already, says his favorite memory from previous CMA Awards ceremonies is one from very early in his career -- and it's something that no one else saw.

"We’re sitting in the aisle, and this guy comes up and goes, ‘Hey, we’re not going to present it on the show, but congratulations, you just won for "The Dance," the video, and left," Brooks recalled recently to The Boot and other reporters. "I go, ‘I guess that’s how it works.’ And so, I couldn’t tell anybody; nobody would believe me. But that might be my favorite."

Although Brooks is thrilled to be nominated for Entertainer of the Year in 2017, that isn't the CMA Awards category that means the most to him.

"Entertainer is always a sweet nod, but I think it’s the song," says Brooks. "If you’re lucky enough to get something for Album or Song [of the Year], I think that’s what it’s about."

Brooks is the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year; he won the trophy last year for the first time since 1998. In 2017, he is nominated along with Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Chris Stapleton and Keith Urban.

The 2017 CMA Awards are scheduled to air on ABC on Nov. 8, at 8PM ET; the ceremony will take place live at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will host the ceremony for the 10th year in a row.
