How Do White Men in North Dakota Refer to Their Other White Friends?

Here is something to get your mind off the hustle and bustle of the holiday spirit. When it comes to white guys referring to their buddies, what do we call our friends in North Dakota?

Is it "bro"? Surprisingly enough, that is a term that is used heavily in a portion of the country.

According to QZ.com, they published the results of a survey to see how  white men refer to their other white friends. Bro, pal, buddy, friend or dude? Think about this now. You may think you know this, but after living here in the Midwest for the last 9 years, I for sure thought I had this, but I was way off.

You're wondering how QZ came up with this? According to the survey results,

"Forensic linguist Jack Grieve has been working with several billion tweets, collected by Diansheng Guo of the University of South Carolina, to analyze the geography of language using location data attached to the tweets.

I find this amazing! Pretty much the group looked at many (billions) tweets from every region in the country to come up with the results,  So much work to figure out how white men refer to their bro's or their buds.  Let's break this down.

The term "dude" was heavily used in the South, along the Gulf Coast and on the West Coast including California and the Great Lakes area including Chicago and Detroit. Think of  the beach, surfer guys saying "DUWED"!

"Bro" was used in the South, and moved West into Texas and upward to Oklahoma.

"Buddy" was used much in the Midwest, mostly Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Eastern North Dakota in the Fargo area.

"Fella" was used a little in NoDak, Northeast Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia.

"Pal" was used heavily in most of North Dakota, Minnesota and Montana.

This is not to say that the other terms of endearment were not used in the other states, it only meant they were not used as HEAVY as they were in most states. We all know "dude", "bro" and the other terms are used in every state.

To recap, North Dakota white boys will refer to you as "fella" or "pal" mostly.
