Stores will be busy as many people will exchange or return a gift that someone spent so much time shopping for. Is it the thought or is it the value of the gift? Who knows, but this I do know, if you're expecting cash, even with a receipt, then you maybe expecting too much. I made a few calls to major retailers on Christmas Eve to get some guidelines for gift exchanges or returns and without exception, most stores will offer credit or exchanges or will credit a purchase to a credit card if you have the receipt and the card was used in the original purchase. Beside that, not much wiggle room!

Here are some tips according to retailers I contacted so, before you head back to the mall or store of purchase, make sure you understand the stores return policy or you could be standing in line for a very ling time.

The stores I spoke to in Bismarck-Mandan have toughened up  their return policies over the past few years, and have shortened the period to return Christmas gifts. Did you know that the store is not legally required to offer a store credit for your return, but do this as a customer service. Stores can limit returns to credit only with or  without a receipt, and some stores will only honor returns within a 30 day period. Be on the look out for various charges such as restocking fees and such.

One retailer said the best time to beat the crowd is after 6PM until close on weekdays and it would be best to wait until after the New Year, but not to wait much later than the first week in January. The crowds are the busiest the week after Christmas.

Some items can not be returned and it seems obvious, but according to about.com/retail industry-holiday return policy, panties, bodysuits, under garments and lingerie's items are a no-no. Plus some retailers my not accept items that are opened or not in original condition.

Again, the crowds will be like you experienced on Black Friday and it's best to call the merchant before you fight the crowds!

Do you plan to exchange or return a gift?
