BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Health says outdoor enthusiasts should take some precautions before tick season this year.

The department says areas that are heavily wooded or have tall grass or brush are more likely to be infested, especially between April and September.

It's recommended that those spending time outdoors this tick season wear light-colored clothing and long pants, and also tuck their shirts in.

Applying insect repellant that contains DEET to clothes and exposed skin can also help prevent ticks, which can cause Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

If you find a tick, you should remove it promptly.
