This was a horrific crash in the final lap of Sunday's IndyCar race, the Grand Prix of Houston injuring Dario Franchitti with several injuries including braking two vertebrae and his right ankle.

Franchitti, the three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, had surgery on his ankle. He was being held overnight.

Road crews rushed to the crash site where 13 fans were hurt and some race promoters were also injured and 11 were treated on site at Reliant Park.

The accident in Turn 5 was reminiscent of Dan Wheldon's fatal 2011 crash at Las Vegas in that competitors had to drive through the wreckage.
