BELFIELD, N.D. (AP) — Stark County State's Attorney Tom Henning says a man shot by Belfield's police chief is being treated at a Bismarck hospital for a wound that is not life-threatening.

Henning tells KXMB-TV 27-year-old Richard Treff was shot in the leg Wednesday when he allegedly charged Chief Nick Barnhard while pointing a handgun at him.

Treff is from California and has been working in southwestern North Dakota. He is charged with terrorizing and interference with an emergency call. Both are felonies that carry a maximum punishment of five years in prison. Court records do not list an attorney for him.

Barnhard has been put on paid administrative leave while the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation looks into the incident. That is standard procedure.
