MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck-area authorities have euthanized a moose that they say had caused property damage and traffic problems.

KXMB-TV reports Mandan Police Chief Dennis Bullinger said Wednesday the animal was put down Tuesday afternoon. Bullinger says he regrets that they had to kill the moose, which had become popular with residents north of Mandan. Officials had concluded that tranquilizing and moving the animal wasn't an option.

Police say they had received eight reports of the moose being within city limits.

Bullinger says the Game and Fish Department was consulted and wardens were on hand Tuesday. Meat from the animal was donated to local food banks and the Sportsman Against Hunger Program.
