MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Zoo officials in Minot are welcoming home eight African penguins that were displaced following a massive flood that hit the city in 2011.

KXMC-TV reports a "welcome home" event is slated Thursday at the Roosevelt zoo.

The penguins were being cared for at zoos in Minnesota while the flood-damaged exhibit in Minot was rebuilt.

African penguins live in southern African waters in their wild habitat and are endangered. Zoo officials say the birds are about 18 inches tall and weigh about 6 pounds.

Zoo officials say the birds also are known as Jackass Penguins because of their donkey bray-like call.
