It's one of those things you got to have. A necessary evil! But when you need it, it's nice to have. We're talking about car insurance. 

Insurance Quotes.com came out with a list of the most expensive states for auto insurance and the cheapest states.  There are many variables in such a quote, so be clear, we used the following criteria. Male, married, 35 years old and the car is a sedan.

According to Insurance Quotes.com, "According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the average annual cost of car insurance nationwide was $797 in 2011 -- the most recent data available. But when it comes to examining the average cost on a smaller scale, not all metro areas and states are created equal.

The most expensive state is Michigan with an increase of 146% to 172%. The Midwest fared pretty well. North Dakota was clumped in with Minnesota and South Dakota with a modest increase. North Dakota had the highest increase in the Midwest of 13%, Minnesota with 8% and South Dakota at 9%. In comparison, other Midwest states had a decrease in insurance rates including Iowa at -10%, Nebraska at -8% and Wyoming at -12%. Other states that saw a decrease in insurance premiums were Idaho, Wyoming and Wisconsin.
