KX News has reported a familiar scam is making the rounds in Bismarck-Mandan again.

The scam happens over the phone. Upon answering the phone, would-be victims are met with a caller who attempts to intimidate them into giving away money and/or important personal information. The gist of the message is there has been some criminal activity/issue involving your Social Security number, and that your arrest is imminent unless you provide some personal information and pay some form of a fee.

An important detail to note is that there is not always a live person on the other end of the line. Sometimes the message is recorded.

If you receive one of these calls, do not panic and do not provide any information or money to the caller. The Social Security Administration nor any law enforcement agency would make such a call.

In addition, after you have received one of these scam calls, report the incident to the local authorities and/or to the Social Security Administration's Inspector General.
