Singer-songwriter Ray Scott is gearing up to release a brand-new album, and he's giving The Boot's readers an exclusive look into the inspiration for one of the project's songs. Readers can press play above to hear Scott share the meaning behind his new song "Growin' Old."

"Growin' Old," Scott says, is "pretty serious" and "pretty sad." The artist co-wrote the song with his friend Mark Stephen Jones, shortly after a good friend of Scott's tragically died following an accident; he left behind a wife and young son.

“The song itself is about losing someone, whether it be through a divorce, a breakup, or if they pass away,” Scott explains. “It’s not that easy either way, especially when you lose the person that you thought you were going to spend the rest of your life with.”

With lyrics like “I’m growin’ old / I just ain’t growin’ old with you,” "Growin' Old" is a heartbreaker for sure. The song will appear on Scott's forthcoming sixth studio album, titled Guitar for Sale. With producer Michael Hughes, Scott worked to create a classic country vibe on the disc.

"My goal was to do something a little different, something live-tracked that’s not so polished, maybe even rough in spots, with the hope we’d come out with a product that had elements reminiscent of the way music first hit my ears when I was a young’un,” Scott says. "It wasn’t my intent to worry about what the rest of Nashville was doing ... I’m proud to say I think we accomplished that."

Guitar for Sale is set for release on June 9. Fans can keep up with Scott's upcoming tour plans -- which include a stop at the 2017 CMA Music Festival in Nashville -- on his official website.
