Remember: Call Before You Dig

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Public Service Commission says it recently fined four companies for damages to gas lines and an electric cable that occurred during excavation projects in Mandan and Minot.

Officials say the $1,000 and $2,000 fines highlight the importance of the state's "Call Before You Dig" law.

State law requires excavators to contact a state "one-call" center at least 48 hours before digging, so the center can notify them of any pipelines, telephone or electrical lines, or other utility facilities buried in the area. Residents and contractors can contact one-call by calling 8-1-1 or 1-800-795-0555, or by visitingwww.ndonecall.com .

Public Service Commissioner Brian Kalk says that with record growth in North Dakota in both construction and underground infrastructure, it's imperative for everyone to call before they dig.
