According to the Bismarck Tribune, in a 34-13 vote on Senate Bill 2308, the North Dakota Senate approved for allowing "schools to post the Ten Commandments, permit students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and provide immunity from legal liability to school officials for either action." The bill will now go to the House for a vote.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that Senator Janne Myrdal, a former school board member, introduced the bill and believes that it is "an important step for addressing a variety of social ills, such as divorce and teen pregnancy, which she said all trended upward after school-sponsored prayer was outlawed." In case you need a Biblical refresher, here is was God requires of His people with the 10 Commandments:

  1. God is the only god, and nothing else should be worshipped above Him
  2. Do not worship "false idols." Remember, God is the only god.
  3. God's name should not be used as profanity
  4. DO NOT work, but DO worship God on Sunday
  5. Respect your parents
  6. Do not kill anyone
  7. Do not cheat on your significant other
  8. Do not steal anything
  9. Do not tell lies about others
  10. Do not covet

Sure, some of these commandments are great! Of course we should not cheat, steal, lie, or kill. But those things have absolutely nothing to do with religion and everything to do with morality. Also, schools do not need to be telling people to only worship God and to "keep Sundays Holy." The delusion that people will do the right thing and be model citizens "if they just have Jesus" is harmful to kids.

Children are people, they live life and they make mistakes. They should not have religion held over their heads to make them feel guilty, simply for being humans. Families and individuals should make their own decisions to follow any religion, not the schools. And, if a public school system wants to show religious displays, it should be required to display other religions as well.

Do you think that North Dakota Schools should be allowed to display The 10 Commandments?
