Governor Tim Walz is considering state wide mask coverings for all public places according to an article on the Minnesota Reformer.  This comes right after Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has ordered all residents to wear masks in public places according to the Hill.  That order in Kansas goes into effect the Friday before the Fourth of July.

Other states have already introduced mandatory mask orders.  Some other states have been experiencing surges like California, Texas and Arizona.  This has delayed reopening plans or reintroduced restrictions put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

So how likely will Minnesotan's be mandated to wear face coverings this summer?  According to the article in the Minnesota Reformer Governor Tim Walz said, “All these things are difficult decisions to make,” he said. “The best thing we can do is keep social distance, wear the mask, and if you’re sick, stay home.”  The Governor also went on to say that if President Trump and Vice President Pence wore masks it could change the trajectory of the pandemic.  Vice President Pence seemed to respond favorably to Governor Walz comments, saying "We hear you".  Minnesota is doing 20,000 COVID-19 tests a day and has done near a half million since the pandemic began.  To me it would seem likely Minnesota will follow suit much like Kansas.

Could North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum ever consider something like this for North Dakota?  Well, anything is possible, but highly unlikely in my opinion.  North Dakota State University announced last week, that all students returning in the fall would have to wear masks to class.  Even with that being said, the numbers would really have to change.  As of Tuesday morning we've had 3,195 cases of coronavirus in North Dakota with only 79 deaths.  The numbers just don't justify a mandate in North Dakota.
