SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Sioux Falls firefighters foundation is planning to raise $250,000 for a 6-foot bronze statue honoring firefighters throughout city history.

The Argus Leader reports the Sioux Falls Firefighters Benevolent Foundation plans to place the statue of two firefighters outside Sioux Falls Fire Rescue headquarters in front of a wall with the names of every firefighter who has served in the department's 134-year history.

The foundation is a nonprofit with a mission of providing relief to victims experiencing loss after fire-related incidents. It started fundraising in October and will also sell commemorative bricks to be placed along the monument.

Local sculptor Darwin Wolf is creating a clay model of the statue. Wolf's father and uncle were firefighters and he says he's honored to be included in the project.
