The Blue Dog Artist Dies of Cancer; George Rodrigue, A Louisiana Treasure
Artist George Rodrigue, of the Blue Dog fame has passed away after a battle with cancer at a Houston Hospital. Rodrigue was 69. The artist was born along the Bayou Teche in New Iberia, Louisiana about 20 minutes south of Lafayette in the heart of Cajun Country.
It is with much sadness that I share the memories of the Blue Dog with you. Being a proud Cajun from Louisiana, I grew up with the Blue Dog. George had a way of The Blue Dog reflecting the events and times that we were faced with, be it sports or politics or controversy of the day, The Blue Dog was there.
George started drawing the landscape of South Louisianan but it was the drawing on the South Louisiana Cajun Legend called loup-garou, (werewolf) catapulted him to worldwide fame.
It's really hard to imagine Rodrigue gone. It's almost like the death of Blue Dog. The Dog was around in good times and bad, through Katrina, the Saints winning the Super bowl to LSU winning the SEC title to the dark times of KKK David Duke running for Governor and every Mardi Gras, The Blue Dog was there. Is a sad sense, it's the death of Blue Dog and George which makes is a double loss.
