We all know of the big ball that drops in Times Square for New Year's Eve, but there are other things people and cities drop from the sky to welcome in the New Year.

I'm sure there is a list of these somewhere, the following are things I've witnesses or have had friends or family tell me about. Some are regional and some are downright strange!

  • Hershey, PN- drops a huge Hershey's Kiss.
  • Port Clinton, OH- drops a huge walleye fish, tasty but messy.
  • Terre Haunte, IN- these guys drop watermelons, the reason is unknown to me but it was a delight to see!
  • Atlanta- drops a peach for obvious reasons.
  • Flagstaff, AZ- the dropping of the pine cone. Flagstaff boarders the Coconino National Forest, therefore the pine cone.
  • Elmore, OH- these folks drop a big fat sausage.
  • Mobile, AL- here they don't drop, Mobile raises a HUGE Moon Pie.
  • Brasstown, NC- they drop a possum. Hold on animal activist! The possum (live) is in a glass pyramid and at the stroke of midnight, the creature is released and the party begins.
  • New Orleans, LA- for a while the Crescent City would drop a huge pot of gumbo. In recent years, New Orleans has changed and now drops a fleur-de-lis, which is a flower. Imagine the symbol on the side of the New Orleans Saints helmet.

Did we leave one off the list? Let us know! I think we should start a tradition of dropping something in Bismarck. Maybe a huge ice sickle?

Whatever you’re dropping or raising, have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
