It's been a decade and a half since the Bison have traveled to Grand Forks to play UND, but that streak will end on October 2, 2021.

The Fighting Hawks announced their 2021 schedule on social media on Wednesday, with the renewal of this old rivalry taking the spotlight. The two teams haven't played each other since NDSU beat UND 34-9 on September 19, 2015.

The two teams will play each other twice before that 2021 game. UND is scheduled to travel to Fargo this year on September 7. The two teams will see a lot more of each other starting in 2020 when the Fighting Hawks will join the Bison in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. They will play in Fargo yet again that year, this time on November 14.

The last time the two teams played in Grand Forks, UND came away victorious with a 28-21 overtime victory. It was the last exchange of the Nickel Trophy, with NDSU moving to Division I the following year and putting a damper on one of college football's oldest rivalries. The The UND-NDSU football rivalry dates back to 1894, and the Nickel Trophy faded from public view until being officially retired last December.

With NDSU's recent string of national success, it may be surprising to learn UND has won 10 of the last 14 meetings with the Bison. The Bison hold the longest winning streak in the series, having won 12 straight between 1981 to 1992. UND leads the series with a record of 62-45-3 in its meetings with NDSU.
