UND Hockey Ranked #1 Heading Into 2020 Season!
The University of North Dakota hockey team will start the 2020-2021 season, the same way they ended the 2019-2020 season. Ranked number one in the country. UND breezed through last season ranked number one for much of it. It seems like they beat every good team in the country, and were set up nicely heading into the NCAA playoffs for another National title.
Then COVID-19 hit. Pro sports started cancelling seasons, and you knew college hockey would face the same fate. Looking back, I believe it was a mistake. They could've had some sort of a post season in a bubble like scenario, that would've given the Fighting Hawks another chance at a National Championship. Of course, the NHL had it's season this year with the same kind of set up, and it was very successful, with COVID-19 a non issue for the most part.
Now, UND will start the 2020-2021 season in a bubble, so to speak. They will start the season playing in Omaha, Nebraska, where they will play their first 10 games of the season in a pod set up. According to an article in the Bismarck Tribune, The NCHC league will be divided up in two geographic divisions. North Dakota will play in the West, with Colorado College, Denver and Nebraska-Omaha. The East will consist of Miami of Ohio, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan. Teams will play division foes 6 times over the course of the season and each-cross division rival twice for a total of 26 games for the season.
The second half of the season, will run January through March, will consist of home and home road games against divisional foes. The complete schedule has not been released at the time of this article.
Now, the big question? Will fans be allowed to the games once they start back up in January? Nobody, seems to know for sure, but you can bet it will be at a very limited capacity. I for one can't wait for another season of UND hockey, in fact here's a video to get you excited too!
