Weekend Rainfall Sets Record in Dakotas

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Weekend rainfall in the Dakotas set records in both states and led to flash flooding in some areas.

The National Weather Service reports that Minot in northern North Dakota got more than 2.6 inches of rain on Saturday, breaking a 62-year-old record for the date. Pierre in central South Dakota got more than 1.4 inches, also a record — and nearly all of it fell in just one hour.

Water flowed over U.S Highway 83 in central North Dakota — a major north-south artery. The rain also washed out games at the McQuade charity softball tournament in Bismarck, which drew more than 450 teams from around the country.

Showers are in the forecast for both states this week. A severe thunderstorm watch was posted for southeastern South Dakota early Monday.
